Two Hundred Years of Kentucky History: The Revival of 1800 and South Union Shaker Village

Kentucky boasts a rich and unique faith history, and past communities of faith reveal the state’s legacy even into the present day. One such group is the Kentucky Shakers, a regional religious community that could once be found across the United States, and another is the revivalists of the Second Great Awakening. These faithfuls set the tone for hundreds of years in Kentucky and continue to inspire a legacy of unity and harmony among visitors exploring faith today.

South Union Shaker Village

Shaker communities believed in simplification. Their progressive theological practices emphasized communal living, pacifism, gender equality, withdrawal from worldly things, and sustainable living. In Kentucky, it was no different!

The South Union Shaker Village was a 6,000-acre farm in southern Kentucky where the South Union Shaker community lived from 1807 to its closure in 1922. The massive complex — which became known as the village of South Union — contained over two hundred buildings, including dormitories, shops, barns, and stables. It even has a mill complex that was unrivaled in the area at the time. Shakers were known throughout America to craft spectacular material goods, like furniture. You can see such furniture, textiles, tools, and other household items at South Union thanks to efforts in the 1960s to preserve Shaker culture through the Shaker Museum at South Union, found in the 1824 Centre House on the property.

Today, you can visit some of the original Shaker architecture on 500 acres of the original village. While only nine of the 200+ remain, these buildings offer a fantastic glimpse into the past and daily lives of the Shakers at South Union. Learn more about the community in the museum — part of the South Union Shakertown Historic Trail and included in the US National Register of Historic Places.

Red River Meeting House

Did you know that the Second Great Awakening began in Loganville, Kentucky? The Revival of 1800 — also known as the Red River Revival and the first religious camp meeting in America — was held from June 13-17, 1800 and sparked a religious fervor that joined with many other evangelical movements across America in the early nineteenth century.

The Red River Meeting House is a recreation of the original site of this famous revival. Presbyterian minister John McGready organized the event in the modest log cabin, but many other pastors took part alongside him. People traveled for hundreds of miles to join their fellow Christians for the four-day service. Bridging gender, race, and class, the Red River Revival and subsequent Second Great Awakening ushered in a spirit of unity and faith to the American South that echoes through Kentucky to this day.

While the log cabin may not be original, you can sit on its humble benches and contemplate the unity and faith of the people who praised and prayed two hundred years ago. You could even speak a few words of wisdom from the pulpit yourself!

Summer is the perfect time of year to plan a getaway and have some fun, and we don’t think there’s anything better than spending a few days exploring the Kentucky Faith Trail. There’s so much to see, from quaint revival meeting houses to towering cathedrals. The Kentucky Faith Trail boasts a rich and beautiful history of faith, perseverance, and pioneering spirit that acts as an enduring legacy for generations to come. Here are a few of our top locations that you simply can’t miss.

The Ark Encounter

Have you ever wondered how big Noah’s Ark was? At the Ark Encounter, you can actually walk on board and explore all three decks of a full-size replica in person! Through this immersive experience, you can learn more about what life would've been like on the Ark and even interact with animals at the zoo. Educational experiences with a biblical lens are available for all ages. When learning is this fun, you’ll want to spend all day at the Ark Encounter.

Creation Museum

At the Creation Museum, you can discover an interpretation of the biblical account of the six days of creation as found in the book of Genesis. With fascinating exhibits, animatronics, and multimedia presentations, the museum has an interactive and engaging display for everyone. You can even buy combo tickets with the Ark Encounter for double the entertainment.

Abbeys, Basilicas, & Cathedrals

The Kentucky Faith Trail is home to two beautiful cathedrals: the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown and the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington. St. Joseph’s is the first cathedral in the US west of the Allegheny Mountains, making it a popular pilgrimage spot. The Basilica is a stunning ode to Gothic architecture, stone carvings, and stained glass. Alongside their beautiful construction, both cathedrals offer space for reflection, prayer, and worship. You can also visit the Abbey of Gethsemani, a Trappist Catholic monastery. All their liturgies are open to the public, so no matter what time you find yourself there, you may have the opportunity to pray and worship with the brothers.

Meeting Houses from the Great Revival

Step into a season of renewal by exploring some of Kentucky’s famous sites and meeting spaces from the Great Revival of 1800. This historic movement influenced not only Kentucky but the entire nation, and you can still explore the grounds where religious history took place.

The Red River Meeting House is a replica of the site of the first religious meeting camp in the U.S. in June of 1800. This meeting marked the start of the Second Great Awakening in America and was organized by Presbyterian minister James McGready.

The Old Mud Meeting House was built in 1800 and was the first low Dutch Reformed Church west of the Allegheny Mountains. Revolutionary War soldiers who moved there after the war are buried in the nearby graveyard.

While these meeting houses aren’t the only two places to experience Kentucky’s part in nineteenth-century revivals, they’re a fantastic place to start!

Kentucky’s faith history began with its earliest settlers, who carried their beliefs across the Southern wilderness to establish communities of worship. Daniel Boone’s declaration that “Heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place” in 1769 set the stage for pioneers to build not only new homes but also sanctuaries of faith.

The Old Mud Meeting House in Harrodsburg was constructed in 1800 and embodies this pioneer spirit as one of Kentucky’s earliest churches. Built by Dutch Reformed settlers using native clay, straw, and logs, its simple yet sturdy design reflects the settlers’ dedication to creating a spiritual refuge in the frontier.

To begin your journey in the northernmost reaches of Kentucky, you might find it easiest to fly into Cincinnati and venture south. If you’re arriving early in the day, consider Newport Aquarium for your first stop. This family-friendly attraction features over a dozen exhibits dedicated to frogs, gators, seahorses, and other aquatic marvels. Newport Aquarium engages the senses with opportunities to look and to touch; get hands on at tanks designed for visitors to interact with stingrays, anemones, and sharks. You won't want to miss the thrilling shark bridge , where guests walk across a suspended rope bridge just inches above the sharks!

If you enjoy touring on foot, Newport Aquarium is an eight-minute walk to The Purple People Bridge , which extends across the Ohio River connecting Cincinnati, Ohio to Newport, Kentucky. The park has a bit of something for everyone. To the delight of hikers and bikers alike, Devou Park maintains eight miles of backcountry trails. History enthusiasts can appreciate Northern Kentucky heritage at the Behringer-Crawford Museum. The space has transitioned from a natural history museum into a dynamic cultural center dedicated to education and the arts.

Spend the afternoon exploring MainStrasse Village. This historic neighborhood boasts a range of shops, restaurants, and galleries. MainStrasse is also known for its festivals, including celebrations for Mardi Gras and Oktoberfest. The area’s German influences abound; among them a Glockenspiel in Goebel Park and “Goose Girl Fountain” in George Steinford Park, an homage to German authors, The Brothers Grimm.

Saturdays are for the races. Florence Speedwa y in Union, KY is a roaring track for dirt late model racing. Watch the drivers zoom around the clay oval that’s been home to motor enthusiasts since the 1950’s. Bring your own snacks, and maybe a set of ear plugs, for a few hours of fast and furious competition. Sunday, take your journey west for more historical treasures. In Burlington, pay a visit to the Dinsmore Homestead Museum . The Homestead is a time capsule of regional Kentucky history. Here, displays of original artifacts preserve the stories of the Dinsmore family, their farm, and the enslaved people who operated the property.

For a blast to a more distant past, plan a stop at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site . The park’s name is inspired by the prehistoric fossils discovered there in the 18th century and its active salt spring “licks”. A herd of bison call Big Bone home; the animals were beloved resources for the American Indians native to this land. Bring your binoculars! Birders can view a variety of species including warblers, owls, and hummingbirds.

Boone County Arboretum , “where fun and family take root,” boasts 121 acres of protected native grasslands and woodlands. A Faith-Centered Day Trip in and Around Lexington, Kentucky

While Lexington, Kentucky, may be best known for its horse farms and thoroughbred race tracks, did you know that the city has a rich faith history as well as lots of fun family attractions?

Several stops on the Kentucky Faith Trail are near Lexington and would be easy to visit during a day trip. Start with Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill , home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910. The destination features 3,000 acres to discover as you explore The Historic Centre, The Farm, The River, The Stable, and The Preserve. Sample farm-fresh produce, take a hayride or horse-drawn carriage ride, get a glimpse at wildlife, and listen to the stories and music of the people who once inhabited this community. There are more than 10,00 pieces on display in The Historic Centre, carefully preserved by the Shaker Village’s expert staff, and several hands-on activities for visitors of all ages to engage in. Exhibits and tours are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site is also open to hikers and walkers seven days a week. Meeting House Mania: Four Meeting Houses that Sparked Revival Across the Southern United States

Visit 4 culturally and religiously significant meeting houses in 2 days!

In colonial times, a meeting house was typically the first public building erected when a new community was established. These spaces served as both houses of worship and gathering places to hold public meetings where important decisions were made. These simple structures were essential for a variety of denominations. There are four meeting houses featured on the Kentucky Faith Trail, and all helped spark religious revival in the state’s early history. Make a road trip out of it and visit all four in two days!

Old Mud Meeting House
The Old Mud Meeting House was the site of the first low Dutch Church west of the Allegheny Mountains. This building has continuously served as a place of worship for centuries, housing various denominations since its opening in 1800 until quite recently. The vertical log building, reinforced with mud and straw panels, is known as one of the most historic and architecturally important buildings in the state. The church was established by 50 families who moved to Mercer County from Pennsylvania in 1781 and is now owned and maintained by the Harrodsburg Historical Society. Visitors can also explore the adjacent graveyard, a final resting place for the ashes of Revolutionary War soldiers who hailed from the area. Located on Dry Branch Road in Harrodsburg, the Old Mud Meeting House is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Old Mulkey Meetinghouse
The Old Mulkey Meetinghouse, built in 1804, is the oldest freestanding log meetinghouse in the Commonwealth. It was here that John Mulkey, a third-generation Separate Baptist preacher, stepped out in faith and took his famous stand against Calvinism in 1809 to lead Mill Creek Baptist Church toward “New Testament” Christianity. The Old Mulkey Meetinghouse site is now the focus of a Kentucky State Park where visitors can learn about religion, have a picnic, explore the small research library, walk along the Storybook Trail, and see the graves of Hannah Boone (Daniel’s sister) and other pioneers. The park is at 38 Old Mulkey Park Road in Tompkinsville. The park is open Thursdays and Fridays and the first Saturday of the month from Nov. 16 through March 31 and is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 1 to Nov. 15.

“Racoon” John Smith’s Cabin
The “Racoon” John Smith’s Cabin in Monticello, Kentucky, was built in 1839 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Smith, who was born in 1784 and died in 1868, was an early leader in the Restoration Movement and played a critical role in spreading the message over much of Kentucky. Smith’s collaborators included Thomas and Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone. In 1972, the First Christian Church in Monticello appointed a committee to investigate the possibility of obtaining and preserving the old log cabin home of Elder John Smith. The cabin was located on a farm 16 miles from Monticello in an area called Horse Hollow. Frank Vogler gave the cabin to the church and with loving care, it was moved “log by log, hearthstone by hearthstone, chimney stone by chimney stone” to its present location. The “Racoon” John Smith’s Cabin is now located across the street from the First Christian Church in Monticello at 108 Michigan Ave. The site is open for visitors Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call First Christian Church at 606-348-5131 before arriving if you’d like to see inside the cabin.

Red River Meeting House
The Red River Meeting House is a replica of the site of the first religious camp meeting in the United States, held June 13–17, 1800. This gathering marked the start of the Second Great Awakening, a major religious movement in the United States in the first part of the nineteenth century. The meeting, which drew participation from several preachers, was organized by Presbyterian minister James McGready (also spelled M’Grady) in Logan County. The site is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Meeting house reservations are recommended for group use. The Red River Meeting House is at 3008 Schochoh Road in Adairville.

It was Daniel Boone who with his first footfalls into the Kentucky wilderness in 1769 compared this land to paradise. And Kentucky’s rich history of faith —from early settlers building churches to contemporary attractions bringing the Bible to life—echoes the frontier explorer’s assertion that “heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place.”

Today, the rich history of Kentucky’s faith-filled past comes to life along the Kentucky Faith Trail. Presenting a full spectrum of religious traditions, from the Second Great Awakening to a literal interpretation of the biblical account of creation, the Kentucky Faith Trail is a family-friendly adventure filled with spiritual moments and activities to inspire, enlighten and reinvigorate your faith whether it is a faith-based scavenger hunt, 19th century ballgame, or ziplining at an ark of Biblical proportions. Here we’ll show you how to make the most of a 3-4 day sojourn moving northbound along the Kentucky Faith Trail.

Day 1: Bowling Green Area

Built in 1804, the Old Mulkey Meetinghouse in Tompkinsville is the oldest freestanding log meetinghouse in the Commonwealth. Here, John Mulkey, 3rd generation Separate Baptist preacher, took his famous stand against Calvinism to restore the congregation to “New Testament” Christianity.

Now a Kentucky State Park State Historic Site, it is home to a Storybook Trail, playground, picnic grounds and the quest game, “The View from the Pulpit.” Grab a pencil and a copy of the quest from the park office and search for clues in the old church records, the cemetery—final resting place of Hannah Boone (Daniel’s sister) and the Meetinghouse.

In Auburn, see original artifacts of the Shakers who lived at the South Union Shaker Village from 1807 to 1922, and learn about ongoing restoration efforts at the site. Plan a visit to coincide with events held at the village, such as seasonal farm-to-table dinners, vintage baseball games and an annual Holiday Market.

Start day 2 with time spent meandering the Abbey of Gethsemani a monastery in the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, part of the body of the Roman Catholic Church. Ark Encounter : A modern engineering marvel, the Ark Encounter features a full-size Noah’s Ark, built according to the dimensions given in the Bible. Red River Meeting House : The Red River Meeting House is a replica on the site of the first religious camp meeting in the United States, held June 13–17, 180. It marked the start of the Second Great Awakening, a major religious movement in the United States in the first part of the nineteenth century. The meeting was organized by the Presbyterian minister James McGready (also spelled M'Grady) in Logan County, Kentucky, and several preachers took part.
